Finland – The Land of the Sauna and the Northern Lights
Finland is a country in northern European with a population of just under 6 million people. This country is part of a peninsula that is bordered by the Gulf of Bothnia to the west and the Gulf of Finland to the south. Finland shares land borders with Russia to the east and Norway to the north.
It is interesting to note that Finland was under Swedish rule for 700 years right until 1809 when it became an autonomous grand duchy within the Russian empire. This remained for another 100 years until Finland finally gained independence on the 6th of December 1917. Finland was invaded by the Soviet Union in 1939 and again found itself at war with the Soviets from 1941 to 1944 before its independence was guaranteed at the end of WW2. Although, Finland remained tied to the Soviet Union diplomatically for many decades, it has always been culturally part of the Western civilization. It is regarded as one of the Nordic countries (along with Sweden, Norway, Denmark and Iceland).
Compared to her neighbours, Finland industrialized rather lately, mostly after the 1940s. However, the country has achieved something of an economic miracle since then. The country is a global leader in the pulp and paper industry, metal industry and also in electronics. The rate of inflation is one of the lowest in Europe and the country has an extensive social security system. Finland’s cities are highly developed with excellent infrastructural facilities.
