Why do flowers feel so at home in Brussels?

This is the city that carpets its most famous square with them. Every two years in mid-August, the Flower Carpet covers the Grand Place with hundreds of thousands of begonias — a Belgian growing speciality — arranged into a single vast design, a tradition running since 1971. Each spring the Royal Greenhouses of Laeken open their monumental glasshouses to the public for just a few weeks, and the queues speak for themselves. Between these events, the habit continues at street level: florists around the Sablon and the Marches aux Fleurs tradition keep fresh stems part of everyday Brussels life, not just special occasions.

Who are people sending flowers to in Brussels?

Often, someone far from home. Brussels is one of Europe's most international cities — EU institutions, NATO and global companies fill neighbourhoods like Ixelles, Etterbeek and the European Quarter around Schuman with expats whose families live continents away. A bouquet for a birthday, a new job at the Berlaymont, or simply a hard week abroad carries extra weight when the sender is an ocean away. Belgian dates matter too: Mother's Day here falls on the second Sunday of May — though around Antwerp many families keep the old custom of celebrating it on August 15 — and January 6 brings flowers alongside galette des rois in many homes.

How does hand delivery work across the communes?

Brussels is really nineteen communes stitched together, each with its own town hall and quirks. A local florist navigates Uccle's leafy avenues, Schaerbeek's Art Nouveau streets and Saint-Gilles' tight parking with equal ease, and rings the right doorbell in buildings where an outside courier would give up. Your card message — English, Spanish, French or Dutch — is delivered exactly as written, a real courtesy in a capital that runs on two official languages.

What style suits a Brussels bouquet?

This is the capital of Art Nouveau — Victor Horta's townhouses here are UNESCO-listed, all curving lines and botanical motifs — and that sensibility never quite left the city. Local florists compose loose, garden-style arrangements as happily as tight classic domes of roses. Tell us the occasion and the florist works with it in mind, substituting only with equal or better stems when a variety runs short.

Sending elsewhere in the country is just as simple: see flower delivery across Belgium, including Antwerp and Ghent. Pay with cards, PayPal, Shop Pay, or pay with Bitcoin right in the checkout — a genuine rarity among flower services.
